Exhibit: Haitian Artwork
Ceremonial banners are dazzling tapestries of intricately positioned beads and sequins hand sewn on cloth or a rice sack, with a satin backing and border. These impressive banners derive their iconography from African roots, Roman Catholic processional banners, and Masonic flags.
Haitian metal sculptures grew out of the Haitian genius for making treasure from what might otherwise remain trash; old oil drums are transformed by unique visionaries into beautiful objects that reflect Haitian culture and aesthetics. One spectacular piece that is on exhibit is of the Garden of Eden.
Three display cases each exhibiting its own Haitian art specialty including stunning sequined adorned libation bottles and bundles used as tools in Haitian worship, miniature metal works portraying a musical band and some interesting papier mache head dresses used in ceremonies or parades. There are also some other papier mache pieces hung throughout the galleries.
Exhibiting in the hall gallery are mostly Haitian paintings depicting the everyday lives, culture, and religious beliefs of Haitians.
The arts of Haiti are indelibly tied to Haitian culture, historical themes, and to the religion of Vodou. Vodou, a faith that is often misunderstood and maligned in the United States, is a blend of African religions and Catholicism with a healthy dose of Freemasonry. It is a religion of spirit, mystery and deity.
The Waterloo Center for the Arts has the largest collection of Haitian Art in the world. We thank them for loaning us a portion of this exclusive exhibit to share with our community. Come and experience another culture through art.
